Food Allergies

An allergic reaction to food occurs when the body mistakes a particular food protein as being potentially harmful to the body and responds with an almost immediate immunological response. Resulting food allergy symptoms can range from mild itching, swelling, rashes and hives to severe anaphylactic reactions that include wheezing, labored breathing, swelling of the tongue and throat, vomiting, unconsciousness and, rarely but possibly, death. At your appointment, Dr. Stabile will thoroughly review your dietary history and correlate your symptoms with appropriate testing which will help Identify the allergic triggers. This in conjunction with carrying life-saving epinephrine devices will better minimize the future chance of recurrence and provide peace of mind despite your food allergies, which, in some cases, can be lifelong.

Environmental Allergies

Allergic Rhinitis (Hay fever)

Hay fever is a bit of a misnomer because it isn’t caused by hay itself, nor does it produce a fever. Hay fever, more appropriately allergic rhinitis, is caused by uncontrolled swelling of the inside of the nose due to an allergen. The most common allergens are trees, grass, weeds, mold spores, cat, dog and dust mites. Depending on the patient’s age and severity of symptoms, treatment plans for environmental allergies may include avoidance, medications, or allergy shots. Allergy shots are a form of immunotherapy and may help make patients less sensitive to environmental triggers that cause his or her allergy symptoms.

Contact Allergies

Rashes/Contact Dermatitis

Rashes may be caused by contact dermatitis or contact with topical substances to which you are allergic. Through patch testing, we can test for 70 of the most common contact allergens, such as fragrances, nickel, and ingredients found in common skin products. Patches are applied with tape to the back, and the patient is evaluated at intervals of 48 and 72 hours. Following a positive diagnosis, education is provided to the patient to best identify and avoid contact with the allergic substance in the future.
