About Allergic Asthma
If you have allergic asthma, there’s one thing you can be sure of – you’re definitely not alone. Statistics compiled by the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology show over 28 million Americans are diagnosed with asthma by an allergist or other health professional during their lifetime and more than 11 million Americans suffer an asthma attack each year. Almost half of Americans affected by this chronic disease are children, making it the most common serious disease among children.
The primary cause of asthma is an inflammation of the airways in the lungs. This inflammation makes the airways smaller, which makes it more difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs.
Many adults and children with asthma have “allergic asthma,” which means that allergens — like dust mites, mold, animal dander, pollen and cockroach particles — make their symptoms worse. Asthma is a serious disease, but it is a disease that can be well managed. With help from an allergist, adults and children with allergic asthma can lead lives very similar to those of their friends who don’t have asthma.
Signs that you or your child might have asthma include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness. If you think you have allergic asthma, you should talk with our board-certified allergist, Kevin Stabile, M.D., a medical doctor with special training to manage allergies and allergic asthma and help develop a treatment plan.
Each person’s asthma treatment is exclusively customized based on the frequency, severity and duration of symptoms and on the degree of allergic sensitivity.
